Unusual Tales - Clairvoyance

"Unusual Tales", a series presenting Steve Ditko's comics from 1957 to 1959 that are in the public domain.

"Clairvoyance" is a 5-page story from Charlton's UNUSUAL TALES #9 [1957]. It's a story about a boy named David who gets some astounding powers in a high-voltage cyclotron accident, and how it affects his life.

Nice little story, I especially like how Ditko draws the child characters, including the large statue on the first page, and the panels of the other kids rejecting him because of his mental powers.

Upcoming Ditko - Hardcover and softcover Masterworks

Pair of Ditko reprints in Marvel's MASTERWORKS lines.  On the hardcover side, the TALES OF SUSPENSE v3 has a Ditko short from every issue reprinted, plus a few Ditko inks over Kirby on the covers.  Meanwhile the softcovers wrap up the Spider-Man run, starting with the Master Planner storyline, with the entirety of #31 included in the original pencils, which sounds intriguing.  I didn't realize that copies of the pencils of the whole issue existed, I've only seen a few scattered pages.

MARVEL MASTERWORKS: ATLAS ERA TALES OF SUSPENSE VOL. 3 HC
Written by STAN LEE & LARRY LIEBER
Penciled by JACK KIRBY, STEVE DITKO, DON HECK & PAUL REINMAN
Cover by JACK KIRBY
It’s a jam-packed Tales of Suspense monster bonanza! And you know you can’t keep a good monster down. No way, no how, and before they revolutionized the super hero set, Stan Lee and Jack Kirby made monsters their daily diet. Klaag. Oog. Bruttu. Monstrollo. Skyscraper-tall lumbering beasts from outer space; muck-covered monsters from the Savannah swamps; lost world anachronisms from beyond time; and they were all here to teach humanity a lesson, whether we liked it or not. And after Kirby scares you with his creatures from the id, Steve Ditko will tear at your conscience—from the inside out—in tense suspense-thrillers cast with nervous-eyed dreamers and sweaty-palmed schemers, none of whom make it out with getting theirs. Each and every tale is executed by a master of storytelling—by the talents that defined the comic book medium for a generation—and each one is brought to you, gleamingly restored, in the fan-favorite Marvel Masterworks line! Collecting TALES OF SUSPENSE #21-31.

MARVEL MASTERWORKS: THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN VOL. 4 TPB
Written by STAN LEE & STEVE DITKO
Penciled by STEVE DITKO & JOHN ROMITA
Cover by STEVE DITKO & DEAN WHITE
Spinning Spidey’s webs to greater and greater heights, Stan Lee and Steve Ditko created an unabashed cultural phenomenon in The Amazing Spider-Man. Their blend of Peter Parker’s everyday woes, mixed with his webslinging alter ego’s super-heroic exploits, was something undeniably special. And after years of perfecting that formula, they unleashed their Spider-Man masterpiece—the Master Planner saga. Spidey roots out the secret hideout of the mastermind that has been terrorizing New York, but he won’t take him down without a challenge. Buried under a mountain of machinery with the clock ticking and Aunt May’s life on the line, Stan and Steve put Spider-Man through the most wrenching experience of his career and define a hero in the process. They’ll also introduce you to Gwen Stacy for the very first time; show you around the campus at E.S.U.; and run the gamut from Kraven the Hunter to “Just a Guy Named Joe” before a new talent joins the Spider-Man family. The Jazzy One, John Romita, makes his Spider-Man debut! And oh, what a debut it is! His identity uncovered by the Green Goblin, Spidey finds himself fighting for his life only to discover the Goblin is none other than Norman Osborn. To top it off you’ll get the Green Goblin’s origin in an edge-of-your-seat Marvel classic, and, as an amazing never-before-seen bonus, the complete pencils to Amazing Spider-Man #31! Collecting AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #31-40.

Unusual Tales - A Matter Of Luck

"Unusual Tales", a series presenting Steve Ditko's comics from 1957 to 1959 that are in the public domain.

To be clear, it's probably just as well some of these stories have never been reprinted...

"A Matter Of Luck" is the 5-page lead story from Charlton's UNUSUAL TALES #12 [1958].  As is often the case, the opening image presents a dramatic moment from later in the story.  In this case, the excitement is a man correctly guessing the number of beans in a jar.  And yes, sadly, that is as dramatic as the story gets...

So the main interest is in the Ditko art, even moreso than usual for these stories.  The lead character's hair is one of those signature Ditko styles, of course, as is his sometimes rather disconcerting smirk.  And page 3 gives us a small two-faced double-take that never ceases to amuse.

Upcoming Ditko - A DITKO ACT 3

The next new Ditko coming is A DITKO ACT 3. And no, I don't know why he started to counting them with the fifth book, either...

Looks like we have some more of The Grey Negotiator and The Cape, and Miss Eerie makes her first cover appearance. And as usual, Ditko's adding something new to the mix, and being enigmatic about it on the cover. "F-M and F-B"?

Ordering details on this and the rest of Ditko's independent work over here.
